Okay…so I have a habit of coming with with all these great ideas and then pursuing them all…at the same time. It isn’t exactly a recipe for success. So, I am purging the blogs. I will not be pursuing this blog any further and will stick to my all-around-blog-about-the-world-and-especially-my-adorable-baby blog. I would love to see you over there.

Beginning Baby Led Weaning

My Little Man is ready to start solid foods. I was hoping to wait until he was 6 months but he is ready to start a few weeks early so I think it’s time that I get moving. After doing a lot of research about how to wean a baby, my husband and I sat down and decided that Baby Led Weaning would be the best choice for Little Man. A lot of people have no idea what Baby Led Weaning is, and until a few months ago I was one of them. Basically, it is an approach where you allow your baby to decide how quickly he/she progresses into solid food by having them feed themselves. You put whole pieces of food in front of your baby, that have been cooked until soft enough to mash between their gums, and then let them do the rest. This means no expensive jars of babyfood or frozen blocks of pureed peas and NO spoon feeding. But, I will make one thing perfectly clear, this is NOT a hands-off approach. Although you will not be required to put the food into your baby’s mouth yourself, you WILL need to supervise.

If you are anything like me, the idea of not using the liquidy babyfood would make you jump with glee, however, I had some concerns:

Is it safe to give my baby a whole piece of food? Won’t he choke?

-According to the information I found on the Baby Led Weaning website (http://www.baby-led.com/) it is completely safe. Because the food is cooked until soft it allows your baby to mash the food between his or her gums before swallowing. The chance of your baby choking is no more likely than if he or she were eating blended food. Of course, take the obvious precautions, like making sure your baby is sitting up straight.

How will I know what and when to feed him?

-There are a lot of foods that you need to wait to introduce to your baby’s diet. Some high-allergen foods should be avoided all together. I knew that if I bought my babyfood it was all neatly labeled with the age group of that food…so simple! Since I am not buying jars of babyfood, I need to know what it is safe for my baby to have. A close friend referred me to this website http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ . It is GREAT! It has a break down of what foods you can feed your baby when and what foods to avoid. Also, I will be following the 4 day wait rule about introducing new foods.

How would I take snacks with us for travel?

-I am still working on this one, but I know I will figure it out as I see what Little Man likes and doesn’t like.

Would Little Man even be interested?

-Yes, yes and YES! Over the last couple of weeks I have been putting the Little Man in his highchair while I eat lunch. I always eat carrot sticks at lunch time and would place one stick on his tray to see what he would do. Just a few days ago he picked up the carrot and promptly placed it in his mouth. SUCCESS! He LOVES carrots. I was so impressed, surprised and happy that I nearly forgot to snap a photo for Daddy to see when he got home.

My first thoughts….seeing my Little Man discover food on his own is magical. We are just beginning and I will keep everyone updated on how the journey goes. I am certainly not an expert on this method, but I will be happy to share any tips or tricks I learn along the way; like baby led weaning recipes and meal ideas.
